Dubai Expat Tips

Labor Law

The labor law effectively does not exist in Dubai.

This is something to remember about however nice your employer's HR might seem. Every single thing should be in the contract, and it is especially important to look for anything related to redundancy. In Dubai anyone can be dismissed without any redundancy package unless it is explicitly specified in the contract. But even if it is, a court decision is likely to be made in favor of a local employer rather than a foreigner. I haven't heard of any successful employment suits.

Before you relocate to Dubai

Once you have agreed on your contract in principle, it would be a good idea to visit Dubai before finally relocating there. The best option would be if your employer in Dubai provides you with an introduction trip as a part of the contract. If they don’t, then you can go on your own. That will worth it.

I definitely recommend you taking your spouse with you when you go to Dubai, just because she or he might not like Dubai city and you won’t be able to do anything about it. There is nothing wrong with the city or the Middle East, it is just different.
